Could Viagra help boys with Muscular Dystrophy?

Viagra is a widely used medication for treating erectile dysfunction, a type of impotency observed in people around the globe. The Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in Viagra, which is categorized as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5 inhibitor), a neural transmitter that provides relaxation to the penile muscles and also encourages more blood flow through penile arteries. Recently, researchers have claimed to find out another application of Viagra online that, it not only restores the flow of blood to the penis but also to the other muscular regions of the body, which makes it a potential tool to fight a genetic muscle degenerating disorder which affects young boys.

What is muscular dystrophy and how viagra can help?

Muscular dystrophy is a progressive and fatal genetic disorder of muscle degeneration. It can become critical when it starts to affect the muscles of lungs and heart that are needed to pump blood and for breathing. It also affects all other voluntary muscles. It is estimated that this disorder affects one in every 3,500 newborn boys and sets in by the age of 2-6. Most patients with muscular dystrophy have to make the usage of wheelchairs by the age of 15 while some of them do not even reach the age of 40, prime cause being heart failure.

Certain clinical tests done on Viagra stated that the pill improved the flow of blood in the muscles of boys who suffered from muscular dystrophy. Scientists hope that Viagra could slow the onset of the disease and delay the disintegration and gradual loss of muscle fiber. Experts claim that though viagra could prove to be effective, it would not essentially improve the ability to walk in patients.

Viagra causes change in the flow of blood

The scientists at Cedars-Sinai Institute in Los Angeles conducted tests on the effectiveness of Viagra on 10 boys aged between 8-13 by giving them a dose of the drug, all of whom suffered from muscular dystrophy and had a problem in the blood flow.

Post-ingestion, scientists measured the flow of blood in those boys’ muscles when they were made to perform a handgrip exercise prior to comparing it to the measurements of 10 boys of the same age group who didn’t have the disorder. It was found out that the blood flow in the muscles of the test subjects was restored to a healthy level with the help of viagra. The effect was almost immediate and unbelievable.

Can viagra also enhance the ability to walk?

There is no evidence that Viagra treatment for boys with muscular dystrophy can improve the patients’ ability to walk or if it can at all stop their muscle atrophy. It is yet to be established if the improved flow of blood slows the rate of muscle breakdown and whether its long-term usage in treatment is safe or not. The scientists are hopeful that the same properties that are able to increase the flow of blood in patients suffering from muscle dystrophy can at least delay the onset of muscle disintegration in patients, even if viagra is unable to curb it all together.
